Common Summer Plumbing Problems

Summer is in full swing in Brisbane and with it comes the yard parties and other events that occur during hot and humid weather. Because of that, you may neglect your plumbing. Here are five common problems that can occur during hot weather along with tips to help you avoid them.

Clogged Toilets

Your toilets will have worked overtime all summer with the kids being home. Remind younger children that it only takes a few pieces of toilet paper, not a whole roll, during every trip to the loo. Also tell them never to flush little toys. Remember to tell teenage girls that sanitary products are never flushed. If you do have a problem, keep a plunger on hand for minor clogs.

Sewer Line Backups

Sewers can backup when storms hit and the ground becomes saturated with rain. Servicing sewers in the spring can help avoid the worst problems, while installing an inexpensive and easy-to-install drain plug can prevent water from backing up into your home.

Sprinkler Head Problems

Heads for automatic sprinklers tend to break over time and can waste water. Fix your broken sprinkler heads by removing them and taking them to the hardware store to find an exact replacement. Periodically check your sprinkler heads because leaks aren’t always apparent until you get a huge water bill.

Washing Machine Hose Leaks

Your washing machine runs a lot more than usual in the summer. Check the hoses at the back of the machine for possible leaks to prevent a possible flood in your house. The last thing you want is a surprise burst. Spend the money on stainless steel hoses because they last a lot longer than rubber ones.

Garbage Disposal Clogs

With additional parties and barbecues, you garbage disposal will get a lot of use. Garbage disposal clogs are easily prevented. Avoid flushing rinds and coffee grounds, along with grease and oil. If you disposal starts to develop a clog, flush it with vinegar and boiling water. Run water through the disposal for 10 to 15 seconds before and after use. This quick rinse clears any remaining food and heads off drain problems before they start.
