Winter Air Conditioning

mittens-1177211_1920Reverse cycle air conditioning is a unit that cools in Summer and heats in Winter. But exactly how effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly is it? Would it be better to have separate heating and cooling units?

How Air Conditioning Works

A refrigerant cools the air in Summer, but in Winter, a compressor pumps the air into a condenser. This heats the refrigerant used which in turn heats the air that is pumped into your home. This type of unit, whether a split system or box type, can be more efficient than other types of heating and cooling systems.

The perfect climate to operate a reverse cycle air conditioner in is humid instead of dry, and with temperatures ranging between -10°C and 45°C. Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and all of South East Qld is perfectly suited to air conditioning. Units are available designed for more extreme environments

In drier, hotter climates, evaporative air conditioning would be preferable as they add moisture back to the atmosphere inside and can be more efficient.

If frost is a problem in your area it may affect the heat exchange, in which case a fitted automatic de-icing device will solve this problem.

Which Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning System is Best

Systems can be either ducted to each room or split between an outside unit and an inside unit. Choose a system designed for the area you’re trying to heat or cool. Buying the wrong unit may end up more expensive than buying a unit for which the initial investment is higher, due to too much work trying to do too big a job, and will shorten the life of the unit as well. Likewise, too much capacity will cycle more frequently reducing the dehumidification efficiency, wasting energy, and making the room uncomfortable.

Other handy features you may or may not want include:

  • Zone control (for ducted systems)
  • Insulated ducting
  • Sensors detecting your presence in the room can avoid heating/cooling empty rooms
  • An inverter system will increase efficiency
  • Adjustable or moving louvers to change the direction of the air flow
