What You Need to Know About Heat Pumps

Mar 29, 2018

Before you spend thousands of dollars to have a heat pump, also know as a reverse-cycle air con system, installed in your Brisbane home, you should know a few facts about this technology that have the potential to save you thousands of dollars in energy costs over its life. Here is what you need to know.

Insulate Before You Install

Before looking at replacing the comfort system in your home, make sure that you have good ceiling and under floor insulation. The quality of your insulation will determine how hard your heat pump has to work to cool your home. Good insulation means it will be cheaper and easier to cool your home properly. Even well insulted homes can be difficult to cool if exterior draughts permit excessive heat exchanges between the interior and exterior.

Make sure that your home is air tight, that you have sufficient caulking or stripping around windows and doors, and ventilation that could be controlled.

How Heat Pumps Work

A heat pump works via the same principle as a refrigerator, which moves heat from inside the fridge to the outside.  In the heating mode, the opposite is true. Heat pumps also use electricity to move warm air from one area to another.

Many areas in Australia, particular in the south around Brisbane, do not need a heat pump that has both heating and cooling cycles. The only reason you may need a heat pump with both cycles is if you want a minimal amount of heating on those occasional winter mornings when exterior temperatures get a bit chilly.

Heat Pump Efficiency

Not all heat pumps have equal efficiency, even though they are the most efficient way of cooling your home. The most efficient heat pumps on the market will produce about twice the amount of cooling as the least efficient models, all using the same amount of electricity. To determine which are the lest efficient, look for the Energy Star rating label on qualified products.

Selecting a System

When selecting a system, you’ll need to take into account various factors that include your home’s floor plan that includes how many levels you have, the size and orientation of windows and doors, the type of construction as well as the aforementioned level f insulation.
