Turning Down the Thermostat Doesn’t Cool Your Home Any Faster

Jan 19, 2018

Air conditioning provides sweet relief to anyone in South East Queensland, especially when temperatures reach 30°C and more combined with our subtropical humidity. When you step into your home from the outside, you want to cool off fast, so it’s tempting to turn the air con down in order to speed up the process. Resist the impulse to do just that as you can harm your system and waste energy in the process.

How the Thermostat Works With Your Air Conditioning System

A thermostat is a switch, often attached to a computer-based system, which determines whether the air conditioner’s compressor and fans are on or off. The thermostat doesn’t change the speed or cooling capacity of the air conditioner. This is why moving it to a cold setting, such as 18°C doesn’t result in faster cooling. What it does is instruct the air con’s compressor to continue working until it reaches that temperature. Instead of receiving faster cooling, you’re forcing the compressor to work longer.

Why This is Wasteful and Bad for Your Air Conditioner

You really don’t want your home to be 18°C as it’s simply too cold for indoor comfort. If you set your thermostat at 18°C or lower, you’ll end up with uncomfortable home and waste up to 25% more energy. The compressor will be forced to run longer, perhaps rarely shutting off when temperatures in Brisbane are at their highest.  A compressor that runs constantly speeds up wear and tear that can result in an early replacement for the system or an emergency breakdown, which always seems to happen on the hottest day of the year. Finding a temperature that is cool enough for everyone to comfortable, usually 23°C to 25°C, can mean lower bills and a better performing system.

How to Increase Indoor Comfort

Even at recommended temperatures, your home may still feel uncomfortable on the hottest days of the year. Installing a dehumidifier to take moisture out of the air will relieve some of that discomfort. Make sure air filters are changed frequently and that your system doesn’t have any leaking duct work and is in good repair and has sufficient refrigerant.

Air conditioning inspection and servicing from the technicians at Intagas can help your system run better by cleaning all working parts and ensuring that all connections are secure and in proper operating condition.
