Tips on Fixing a Leaking Tap
A leaking tap often indicates problem such as a worn out part. How you go about repairing the tap depends on where it drips and the mechanical makeup of the tap. There are four main types of taps: compression, disc, cartridge and mechanism. Before attempting a repair, first determine the type of tap to understand how you go about fixing it.
#1 Turn Off the Water Supply
Before even thinking about putting a wrench or screwdriver to the fixture, check that you have shut off your water supply near the sink as well as the controls underneath the sink.
#2 Remove the Decorative Parts
Many contemporary fixtures have decorative covers over the valves. Most times, the valve assembly has a fine thread that helps you unscrew the trim piece. Beneath each know, you will find a screw that mounts the handle to the stem. Unscrew the handle and gently remove it.
#3 Loosen the Packing Nut with the Wrench
After loosening the packing nut, you should see the stem. Take it off. At this point, different taps will dictate how you deal with them. For example some taps have stems that pop off while others need to be twisted off. Remove everything gently to avoid exasperating your leaky tap problem.
#4 Pull the Cartridge
If you tap is less than 25 years old, it has a cartridge. Turning it on and off repeatedly means the seats are worn. Attempt to pull it straight out using a setoff channel locks pliers. Sometimes cartridges are tough to remove due to built up scale that locks them in place. Give the cartridge a slight wiggle while putting it will eventually loosen it so you can work it out. If you can’t remove it, call a plumbing professional such as Intagas.
#5 Check the O-Ring
Examine the washer and the O-ring inside of the valve seat. Many times this component is worn out and causes a leak. You’ll want to replace both but e sure to check to see if the O-ring fits properly. You may have to buy a more appropriate size. Take the old O-ring to the hardware store and buy a new one, or if you are unsure, buy a variety of different sizes to check the fit.
#6 Reassemble the Parts
Once you have the parts, reassemble the in the opposite order in which you removed them. If the assembly still drips after replacing the assembly, contact Intagas for first-rate plumbing service in Brisbane and environs.
