How to Safely Use Your Patio Heater

Aug 19, 2017

For many Brisbane homeowners, their outdoor living space is an extension of their home with areas for dining, relaxation and socializing. Getting the most out of this space is important even in winter, when temperatures can drop quickly after sunset. One way to make your outdoor space more enjoyable during cool weather is to invest in patio heaters. These heaters come in free standing, tabletop and wall-mounted versions.

With the exception of wall-mounted units, which are powered by electricity, most patio heaters use either natural gas, or more commonly LPG (liquid propane gas) as their fuel source. As such, you should exercise caution when using these appliances. Here are some tips for safe use of your outdoor heaters.

General Safety Rules

Patio heaters are made only for outdoor use, so you should never bring them indoors under any circumstances. Never use them during high winds as a gust can blow out the flame or tip over the heater, possibly causing a fire. Always use patio heaters in a well-ventilated area. This means you should use heaters in an area that is not obstructed by buildings or other structures to allow for correct combustion and dispersion of combustion products. If a gas leak occurs, a well-ventilated area will allow escaping gas to disperse.

Getting Started

Before using your heater, place it on a firm, level surface capable of bearing its weight. Make sure that all panels, covers are guards are fitted correctly. Other pre-use safety measures include:

  • The heat reflector must be securely in place above the emitter head
  • Allow clearance of at least one meter all around the unit
  • Never carry or pull it by its supply hose
  • Place the heater away from anything that may burn, including gazebos, trees and shrubs and trellis
  • The area around the heater should be kept clean of trip-hazards. Clean spills of grease or food immediately

While in Operation:

  • Do not move while in use
  • Make sure that other combustibles are placed well away from the heater
  • Position the unit in a shielded area so it won’t easily blow out
  • Never hand anything such as clothes, towels or other flammable material on or near the unit
  • Make sure the flame goes out after it is turned off and always wait for the unit to cool before storing it

Have your patio heater serviced regularly by a licensed gas fitter in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The professionals at Intagas can check hose and cylinder connections and more to ensure safe operations for years to come.
