The key to a properly operating gas stove, cooker or cook top is to clean it regularly. Only a few maintenance tasks, such as replacing door gaskets, checking cords and the like are within the skills of most homeowners. Of course, cleaning is never much fun, but as the weather begins to warm with the approach of spring, now is a good time to think about giving your cooktop a thorough cleaning so it continues to operate properly. Following are some tips to keep your gas appliances in good working order.

Cleaning as you go is truly the best way to save yourself from having to remove dried up disasters. However, we all know that life gets busy and there isn’t much time to clean between cooking, eating and everything else in your daily life. If you don’t keep on top of maintenance, you will soon have burner grates splattered with sauce, controls caked with who-knows-what.

Clean the Cooktop

Start by removing the cast iron grates and burner covers. If these are badly stained, place them into a sealable container with ammonia and let them sit overnight. This process will make stains easy to remove. Next, take a safety pin to open the burner ports, which can become clogged over time, leading to uneven heating. Never use toothpicks or other materials that can break inside the ports. Also keep reflector bowls of glass burners clean as the shiny surface making cooking more efficient.

Degrease the Controls

Loosen dried-food with water or baking soda and water. Most can be removed and cleaned in the sin. Clean the control panel where the knobs are with a damp sponge, being careful not to let any liquid finds its way into the electronics. Do the same with the outside of the stove.

Wipe Down the Oven Interior

Skip the self-cleaning cycle and wipe down the interior with hot, soapy water and a scrub pad. Cover stuck-on food with a wet cloth to loosen them and use the scrub pad again. Be cautious with commercial cleaners, as they are highly toxic.
