Maintaining Your Gas BBQ During the Summer
One of the joys of summer is spending time outdoors with family and friends, grilling a wonderful meal and enjoying the entire experience. To do so, you need a properly functioning gas barbeque. These appliances usually have a long life span, but if you don’t regularly clean and maintain your grill, it will have a shorter life, not to mention turn into a potential hazard.
Not only should you perform maintenance before the barbeque season begins, you should also periodically inspect your BBQ’s components to ensure that each is in proper working order. Burners can become dangerously clogged, grease can build up so much that it causes fires that can burn out of control. Rust can also take over your appliance, causing a health hazard to the food you eat. Take these steps to keep your gas grill functioning smoothly throughout the summer.
Clean the Burner and Tubes
Make sure the propane tank is turned off, or disconnect the line if you have a direct supply, before removing briquettes and cooking grates. Carefully detach the gas tubes and burner. Clean the tubes with warm, soapy water and dry. Wipe the burners clean with a damp cloth.
Wash the Grill
Cover the gas valves with aluminum foil to protect the connections from corrosion. Take a stainless steel grill brush and whisk all excess grease and debris from inside the grill box before washing all interior and exterior surfaces.
Clean the Cooking Grates
Take that wire brush again and scrub off charred bits that may have accumulated on the cooking grates. Once you have accomplished this, thoroughly wash and dry them before replacing.
Don’t Forget the Burner Protectors
These often become caked with debris. Give them the same treatment as the cooking grates and thoroughly dry them before sliding them back into place.
Empty and Scrub the Burner Tray
This is the area where all the charred bits accumulate. Some debris may stick to the surface so try to scrub off as much as possible. It’s also a good idea to empty the tray periodically during the long BBQ season.
Burn Off Remaining Debris
After reassembling the barbeque and securing the gas connection, light the barbeque and leave the burners on high for 15 minutes to burn off any remaining debris. It’s also a good idea to take this step periodically during the season to avoid buildup.
Buy a Good Cover
Make sure you have a sturdy cover to protect your barbeque when not in use. Covering the barbeque will help prevent rust and extend its life. Wait until the barbeque is completely cooled.
