How to Get the Most Out of Air Conditioning During Brisbane’s Hot and Humid Summers

Jan 17, 2017

Air conditioning can use a lot of energy during a typical summer in South Brisbane, especially when the temperature gets above 30 degrees Celsius and the humidity is 80 percent or more. When temperatures head towards extremes, that’s when customers contact us about air conditioners that are not working properly or not working at all.

Proper maintenance not only helps you avoid emergency service calls on hot summer days, it also makes your air conditioning more energy efficient. As a homeowner, you should perform several tasks to make sure your air conditioning works properly. These include regularly changing the air filter and keeping the the air coils and the external unit dust and debris free. Both are easy to do and, more importantly, allow air to flow unrestricted through your air conditioning.

Some maintenance tasks are better performed by a professional technician. Having your central air conditioner regularly inspected and cleaned will extend its life and improve energy efficiency. Dirty filters and components make your air conditioning work harder and increase your utility bills, so it makes sense to keep it as clean as possible.

As the hot days continue to increase, you may still worry about your utility bill. You can do several things to reduce wear on your air conditioning while also minimising costs. The first is to avoid setting the thermostat too low. Some people mistakenly believe that setting the temperature to 17 degrees Celsius will cool their homes faster. Doing so simply makes the air conditioner run constantly. Set your air conditioner no lower than 10 degrees below the high temperature of the day. For every degree higher that you set the temperature, you can save about 10 percent in energy costs.

Other things you can do include pointing louvres toward the ceiling, which will direct cold air there where it will sink and cool and entire room. Use fans to help circulate air. Often a current of moving air will make rooms feel more comfortable and allow you to run your system at a warmer setting.

On sunny days, use curtains and shades to block sunlight, especially in rooms that are oriented toward the sun during the hottest part of the day. At the same time, avoid using appliances that emit heat.

If you do find that your air conditioning is not working properly, give us a call and we will come out and assess your situation.
