Five Ways to Save on Summer Air Conditioning Costs

If it is summer in Brisbane, it means that your home air conditioning is running, probably day and night.  Constantly running the air con can make your electricity bill skyrocket, but leaving the unit off  is not an option. Luckily, there are several tips that you can do to help your air conditioner run better and save money as the summer progresses.

Stop cooling the neighbourhood

If your home is 20, 30 years old or even older, the cool air inside has probably begun to seep out into the neighbourhood through worn door and window seals and other sneaky cracks. To locate the problem, get a home energy audit. A certified home energy rate will check your home for leaks and recommend the best way to make it more energy efficient.

If you don’t want to spend the money for an energy audit, perform a mini audit on you own by standing outside your home and running you hand along windows and doors. If you feel cold air escaping, caulk around leaky windows and add stripping around doors.

Get a smart thermostat

If you haven’t upgraded yet to a smart thermostat, it’s time to make a change. Smart thermostats can regulate cooling when you are not home. Many even allow you to adjust settings with smart phone apps.

Make sure the thermostat is on the proper wall

Thermostat placement can play a big part in how well your air conditioning works. If it is on a wall next to a hot window, your air conditioner will turn on more often than it needs to because it will think your home is hotter than it actually is. If you suspect your thermostat is in a bad location, have Intagas move it to a room that is frequently used on an interior wall.

Close the blinds

During the warmest part of the day, close your window blinds to keep out the sun. This move can also help cold air from escaping through the windows.

Use a ceiling fan

Instead of turning down the temperature to feel cooler, use a ceiling fan. Air movement can make a room feel five degrees cooler and only uses 10% of the energy that your central air con does. You can also install a smart ceiling fan that connects to an app that allows you to turn it on and off and control the speed without getting up.
