Consider Using a Dehumidifier for Summer Cooling

Dec 1, 2017

Anyone who has lived in Brisbane for a few years know how hot and humid our summers can be. Sufficient cooling inside your home is a necessity, however, on the most humid days with your air-conditioning unit running on high, you may still not feel sufficiently comfortable. The reason for that is humidity. If the air feels sticky outside, the indoor relative humidity will be high too. Your central unit will remove some humidity, but on days when the air is really saturated, a dedicated dehumidifier working in conjunction with air-conditioning will make you feel more comfortable.

Why Does My Home Need More Than Air Conditioning?

Air feels warmer than the actual temperature when humidity is high, so your air-conditioning unit must work harder to maintain comfort. Often, we simply glance at the day’s weather forecast, paying attention to the temperature but not the humidity. 30 degrees with low humidity feels much different than 30 with high humidity.

The human body sweats to keep itself cool yet also relies on evaporation to wick away moisture throughout the day. When humidity is high, the sweat has nowhere to go, so it remains on you and you feel warmer.

How Dehumidifiers Work

Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air through the use of a small automatic fan that draws air in and passes it over a cold coil. When the air touches the coil, the water it harbours condenses and drops into a collection tray. The air moves toward a warm coil where it is reheated to its original temperature and then pushed through the rest of the building via the air-conditioning system.

Save Money by Turning It On

Over time, pumping humid air directly through your air-conditioning system will take its toll. The equipment will have to work harder to move heavy, humid air through the cooling process. Not only will you have higher electricity bills, your unit will also be more prone to breakdowns. Thus, while comfort may prompt you to buy a dehumidifier, overall cost is nearly as important.

Most of summer is still ahead of us in Queensland, as is most of the humidity. The technology behind dehumidifiers is relatively simple, but they can make a decided difference, especially when your house if full of guests for the holidays. If you have never considered adding a dehumidifier to your system, now is the ideal team. Ask Intagas about your options and the possibility of installation before everyone gathers for the holidays.
