Balancing the Air in Your Home to Avoid Cold and Hot Spots – Part One

Nov 29, 2018

Air balancing will improve air circulation, increase energy efficiency and enhance the overall performance of the central air conditioning system in your Brisbane area home. It means delivering the right amount of cool air to each room to make your home more comfortable. In this first part of our two-part series, we’ll take a look at what you can do yourself to make your home more comfortable.

Close or Open Registers

This is a simple, but effective choice as you can easily move the damper to restrict airflow in the room. Don’t completely close the vents, however, as that can cause other issues to your air conditioning system. During hot weather, open registers on your upper floor and partially close registers on the lower floor or in cooler areas of your home. Start with temperatures ranging from 24˚C to 25˚C, leave the temperature alone for 24 hours and then adjust the vents and the temperature in small increments until you are comfortable.

Try a One-Degree Offset

If you live in a home with two stories and have two thermostats, try a one-degree offset with the upstairs set one degree lower than the downstairs to help with uneven temperatures.

Keep Your Filters Clean

We can never say this enough. Clean filters improve air quality and aids with airflow. This, in turn, increases the efficiency of your system, as reduced airflow through your cooling system will make it work harder and keep energy costs down. When you regularly change the filter, you’ll save 5% to 15% on your electrical bill. Dirty filters are also the most common cause of air con breakdown.

Install Window Coverings

Window coverings impact the comfort level in each room, as those without drapes, blinds or shades heat faster. Windows can considerably improve energy efficiency as 76% of sunlight that falls on standard double-pane windows enters to become heat.

Prevent Airflow Restrictions

Do not cover vents with furniture or items that will restrict airflow. When you block a vent, your system has to work harder. Rearrange furniture and hem curtains so you will have sufficient airflow.

Place Fan setting to “ON”

Fan settings can impact indoor air quality and comfort. Most systems have two settings: On and Auto. IN the “ON” setting, the fan will blow continuously and constantly remove indoor air.

Ask your Intagas technician for more tips on indoor comfort during your next preventive maintenance appointment.
