5 Bits of DIY Plumbing Advice

Mick will tell you what’s genuinely best for your unique situation and budget, without cutting corners or taking advantage of inexperience or emergencies. To help you on your own, here’s a list of five common tips he’s prepared to save you time & money in your plumbing renovations and repairs.

1. Fill a bucket of water

If you’re about to turn off the water to your home to do some plumbing work, the last thing you want is to end up crossing your legs until you have to run desperately to borrow the neighbour’s loo! Your toilet will work just as well if you flush it with a waiting bucket of water. You should get about one flush per 5 litres.

2. Take a picture – it lasts longer

If you’re doing a kitchen or bathroom renovation, and have literally gutted it, take the opportunity to take a photo before putting new sheets of plasterboard or other material back up. This will help you remember where the pipes, plumbing lines, wires, and timber framing are. This goes for floors and ceilings as well. When your next handyman job rolls around, you’ll know exactly where everything is.

3. Take the plunge

Before you undo that S or P shaped pipe under the sink, called the trap, get a large plunger and give it a few quick plunges. The water inside isn’t usually the most pleasant, and nearly always makes a bit of a mess. Plunging it first will help push most of it past the trap. Extra tip – if you have a double sink, put a plug in the other one to create the air pressure needed.

4. Snap a selfie

Sometimes a professional tradesman will use a small mirror angled on the end of a handle to see into small places his head can’t fit. If you have a small hole that’s hard to see into, your smartphone or digital camera will be able to take a photo or video with a flash so you can best see what’s inside those tight, dark spaces.

5. Suck it out

If one of your little angels has posted her toothbrush or his toy down the toilet, a plunger may not help, actually pushing the blockage further down the drain. Before calling a plumber, if you have a workshop wet/dry vacuum, suck out the water and the obstruction that way.

If in doubt, don’t DIY.
